Description

James Nachtwey is a photojournalist and photographer known for his powerful images capturing the human toll of war and social injustice, which evoke both compassion and a call for justice. His work spans conflicts and critical social issues across the globe, including assignments in El Salvador, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Iraq. Nachtwey graduated from Dartmouth College with degrees in art history and political science, which laid the foundation for his understanding of visual storytelling. Influenced by images from the Vietnam War and the American Civil Rights Movement, Nachtwey began his career as a newspaper photographer in 1976 and went freelance in 1980​​. His compelling photographs have been featured in major publications like Time magazine, where he has been a contract photographer since 1984. Nachtwey has also been associated with prestigious agencies such as Magnum Photos and VII​. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Overseas Press Club’s Robert Capa Gold Medal five times, and the World Press Photo of the Year Award twice.
